Use the following steps to get the system to boot from USB drive (or USB stick). See the following link for information about how to create a USB drive: How to Create a USB Recovery Drive and Use it to Recover Windows 10. After getting my T480, I pulled out the default HDD and put in a PM981 SSD (had to buy the adapter bracket and cable). However, when trying to clone the HDD onto the SSD I can't quite boot the HDD from an external device. My method is to copy and paste all the files I need backed up into an iso image or .7z image. Then I copy the image to any of the drives located on my NAS at \server\ and begin the install on the SSD. When the install is done, copy the files from the NAS to the new system.
I have a second laptop. Thinkpad T480 that has a 256GB nvme drive with Windows 10 21H1 64-bit UEFI on it. I want to clone that drive to a larger 1TB Sata SSD. Then use that Sata drive in the Thinkpad. And this is how I did that: Switched off secure boot in the Thinkpad Bios and booted from a Macrium Reflect Free v8 rescue USB key. 1. Lenovo ThinkPad T480s Boot from USB using Rufus. Download Rufus. After installing Rufus simply select the ISO file from the file manager and accept all settings when the popup window appears. Select MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI and If your laptop has UEFI bios then select the other two options. I also tried booting directly from the 2242 Windows disk by selecting it from the F12 menu, or by setting the relevant boot options in the BIOS menu. But each attempted boot would fail in the same way, with a reboot to GRUB.

Nothing special needs to be done in BIOS, but the SSD needs to be 42mm long and NVMe. mSATA won't work, and there is not room for the more common 80mm long drives. The only one I'm aware of is the Toshiba RC100 and those are hard to find these days.
